I believe the plan is to electrify the UP tracks south of San Jose to prepare for high speed rail, at which point electrified Caltrains could run all the way to Gilroy. And then of course there's the tantalizing possibility of through-running tracks at the Salesforce Transit Center in downtown SF, if the second transbay tube ever gets built.
It would be great if they could also do through running, at least on the San Jose end.

I'll be happy when they can at least get the train to even *arrive* at salesforce transit center. But yes, a second tube would be absolutely amazing.
